Project Overview
This project involved installing a black aluminum horizontal semi-privacy wall topper along an existing perimeter wall at a residential property in Sherman Oaks.
The homeowner wanted to increase privacy and security while maintaining the modern, open feel of the backyard. Because the property already had a solid base wall, the goal was to extend the height without making the space feel heavy or enclosed.
The Challenge: Increasing Privacy Without Blocking the Space
The backyard is designed with a clean, modern layout that includes large concrete pavers, open landscaping, and mature trees. While the existing wall provided a basic boundary, it did not offer enough privacy from surrounding homes. At the same time, the homeowner did not want to replace the entire wall structure or create a bulky fence that would visually close in the yard.
Key challenges included:
- Existing wall structure: The topper needed to integrate seamlessly with the concrete wall.
- Maintaining an open atmosphere: The yard has wide paving patterns and open landscaping that needed to remain spacious.
- Modern design compatibility: The fencing style had to match the architecture of the property.
- Durability and low maintenance: Materials had to withstand sun exposure while requiring minimal upkeep.
The Solution: Modern Horizontal Aluminum Wall Topper
1. Horizontal Semi-Privacy Aluminum Panels
Black aluminum panels with horizontal slats were installed on top of the existing wall structure.
Why it works: Horizontal slats provide privacy while still allowing airflow and light to pass through the fence.
2. Seamless Integration with the Existing Wall
Instead of removing the base wall, the topper system was mounted directly above it.
Why it works: This approach increases the fence height while preserving the structural base and reducing construction complexity.
3. Modern Black Aluminum Finish
The fence was finished in matte black aluminum to match the contemporary design of the property.
Why it works: Black aluminum creates a clean contrast against the light-colored wall and landscaping, giving the space a refined look.
4. Horizontal Lines for Visual Balance
The horizontal orientation of the slats was chosen to complement the wide layout of the backyard.
Why it works: Horizontal lines visually expand the space and align with the geometry of the patio and paving patterns.
