Project Overview
This project focused on replacing an old wood gate with a 6-foot black aluminum semi-privacy gate at a residential property in North Hollywood. The new gate was designed to improve security and privacy while keeping the narrow side yard visually light and functional.
The Challenge: Privacy in a Tight Side Yard
The existing wood gate was worn, uneven, and no longer reliable. The side yard is narrow and bordered by a block wall and the house exterior, which limited installation space. The homeowner needed better privacy and security without turning the passage into a dark or closed-off corridor.
Key challenges included:
- Aging Wood Structure: The old gate showed visible wear and gaps.
- Limited Clearance: Tight spacing required precise fitting and clean alignment.
- Balanced Privacy: The gate needed to block direct views while allowing light and airflow.
The Solution: Clean, Modern Access with Controlled Visibility
1. 6-Foot Black Aluminum Semi-Privacy Gate
We installed a 6-foot semi-privacy aluminum gate designed with horizontal slats.
Why it works: The semi-privacy layout blocks direct sightlines while allowing light and airflow, which is essential in narrow side yards.
2. Black Finish for Visual Balance
Why it works: The dark finish adds a clean, modern contrast to the light-colored walls and concrete. It also visually “frames” the entry without making the space feel heavy or enclosed.
3. Aluminum Frame for Long-Term Stability
The gate was built on a rigid aluminum frame.
Why it works: Aluminum resists warping and sagging, ensuring the gate stays aligned even with frequent daily use.
4. Precise Fit Between Wall and Block Column
Special attention was given to mounting the gate between the house wall and the block column.
Result: The gate fits cleanly within the tight opening, with smooth operation and no wasted space.
Key Takeaways
- Semi-privacy designs are ideal for narrow side yards.
- Black aluminum finishes add contrast without overwhelming small spaces.
- Aluminum frames provide long-term durability over wood.
- Precise installation is critical when clearances are limited.
- Balanced visibility improves both security and comfort
