Project Overview
The Challenge: Security Without Isolation
The homeowners at Wrightwood faced a common dilemma: how to secure a large property boundary without creating a "fortress" feel that clashes with the neighborhood's character.
The primary requirements included:
- Clear boundary definition for a large front perimeter.
- Secure pedestrian access for daily mail and guest entry.
- Heavy-duty vehicle access that wouldn't fail during local power outages.
The Solution: Custom Semi-Privacy Engineering
1. The Semi-Privacy Picket System
For the main span, we selected a 4-foot-high white semi-privacy picket fence with 7/8" x 3" pickets. In our experience, using this specific picket size provides the ideal ratio of visibility to airflow. This allows the property to breathe during our hot Bakersfield summers while clearly signaling "private property" to passersby.
2. Pedestrian Security and Hardware
Security is only as good as its weakest point. For the pedestrian entry, we installed a custom single swing gate. We opted for self-closing hinges, a detail we recommend for all Bakersfield clients—to ensure the gate never accidentally remains open. This was paired with a professional-grade key lock for controlled access.
3. Solar-Powered Automated Sliding Gate
The centerpiece of this installation was the 13-foot automatic sliding gate. To ensure maximum reliability and sustainability, we integrated:
- Solar Power: This ensures the gate remains operational even if the local grid goes down.
- Keypad Entry: For secure, code-based access for service providers.
- Remote Control: Five separate remotes were programmed for the household’s various vehicles.
Expert Tip: When installing automated gates in Kern County, we always suggest solar-ready systems. They are not only eco-friendly but offer a level of "off-grid" security that traditional hard-wired systems lack.
Key Takeaways
- Semi-Privacy Is Key: 7/8" x 3" pickets offer the best balance for California residential properties.
- Automation Reliability: Solar power is the gold standard for gate operators in Bakersfield to prevent lockouts during outages.
- Safety First: Always use self-closing hardware on pedestrian gates to maintain a secure perimeter automatically.
